Lake Martin, A Wildlife Hub With Beautiful Scenery

Within the bounds of Lake Martin, one can find the enchanting Cypress Island Preserve. A Lot of different wildlife call this place home so you never know what you might see while out. You could see an egret fishing for breakfast in the morning and then an alligator sunning itself during lunch.

If you arrive early enough you might just see some birds hunting for breakfast!

Cypress Island Preserve has a lovely out and back trail that runs around one side of lake Martin and crosses over part of the levee. (Learning Moment! The word levee means a raised embankment meant to keep water from overflowing into or draining out of another area.) The normal trail is only about 2.5 miles but can be extended to a 5 mile loop, completely around the lake, if you're ok with walking down the gravel road back to the trailhead.

Overall the trail is well maintained and offers a lot of space. There is very little elevation change to worry about either.

Much of the trail looks like this untill you turn to walk down the leeve.

This trail is wonderful in my opinion. The first time my wife and I hiked this trail we were amazed by the amount of different birds that could be heard singing or seen enjoying the water. This trial is pretty easy and that is what makes it fun, you do not have to focus so much on the path because of its simplicity. Although you should watch out because if the water is too high or it has rained a lot recently it will make for some muddy conditions.

One of the best things about this location is that you can rent a canoe and explore the area by water. That's right! You can either bring your own kayak, like we do, or you can rent one near the lake.

This area is a wonder. It changes with the seasons giving you a new experience each time. Spring and fall offer chances to see the migratory birds. It's a frequent sight to see birds taking a break in the towering cypress trees. On one occasion, my wife and I were paddling on the lake when dozens of birds swirled around us, flitting from tree to tree. It was an experience that truly etched itself into our memories, making the trip all the more remarkable.

On the other hand, April and May are alligator breeding seasons. It is important to know that during this time part of the levee trail is blocked off. During breeding season male alligators are more active and make a loud bellowing/grunting sound to attract potential mates. Male alligators also get more aggressive and will attempt to drive away any possible competition. It is not uncommon for an alligator to mistate a kayak or canoe as a threat that needs to be warded off. On the same note female alligators will be protecting their nest in the shallow waters or on the bank, so hikers should also stay alert. Don’t be afraid, just give them their space… a wide space.

Whether you are looking to walk through nature on a well maintained wide trail or a paddle through the cypress trees, Lake Martin and the Cypress Island Preserve have just what you need. As an added delight, step away from the main trail, a charming boardwalk extends over the water and winds through the trees, complete with inviting benches along the way. It offers a perfect opportunity to pause, immerse yourself in the tranquil sounds of nature, and perhaps avoid any unwelcome mosquito encounters!
